PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change is pleased to work with national and international partners in the development of professional programmes for the tourism, destination management, heritage and cultural sectors.

Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in Destination Management

The Postgraduate Certificate in Destination Management launched successfully in 2008 with students joining us from senior positions in the UK sector including from regional development agencies, tourist boards, local government and destination management organizations. Very positive feedback from our students to date includes comments such as:

“The course has given me a much deeper understanding of destination management.”

“There has been good guidance on proposed content of assignments and also suggestions on additional reading specific to assignment topic.”

“It has provided a clear and much needed link between academics and practitioners in the field of destination/tourism management and can only improve levels of professionalism in this field.”

“The course is proving to be very relevant to my current employment in a destination management organisation.”

Having ‘tried and tested’ the Certificate, the CTCC is delighted to announce the introduction of the Diploma and MSc award in Destination Management through the continuation of our partnership with the Tourism Management Institute (TMI), Bournemouth and Lancaster Universities.

Destination management is an important, dynamic and increasingly complex area of professional practice in the UK and internationally. The TMI is responding to the professional development needs and intellectual challenges faced by destination managers by offering innovative postgraduate level qualifications in Destination Management. Awarded by Leeds Metropolitan University, the Postgraduate Diploma and MSc in Destination Management are delivered by the CTCC with the Department of Geography, Lancaster Environment Centre, Lancaster University and the International Centre for Tourism & Hospitality Research at Bournemouth University.

The qualification is designed to enhance professionalism through encouraging and supporting participants’ critical reflection on practice and the application of relevant theory. Through flexible online delivery, the courses offer professionals working in the sector a means to achieve University accredited qualifications in destination management, as well as to acquire skills and knowledge to assist in tackling new areas of work and/or to move up into leadership roles.
