Top Rankings for Tourism Research
The results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) confirm the internationally excellent work of the Centre for Tourism and Cultural Change (CTCC), along with its partners at Leeds Metropolitan University, the International Centre for Responsible Tourism and the UK Centre for Events Management. Some 75% of the work in the Unit of Assessment which covers tourism is assessed as being of an international standard in terms of originality, significance and rigour, and this includes research rated as world leading (4*) and internationally excellent (3*).
The results of RAE place LeedsMetropolitanUniversity in the top 6 institutions in the UK with regard to tourism’s Unit of Assessment. The Official Report of the RAE Panel commended the good infrastructure for the support and supervision of research students, the experience of staff and, in recognition of our global research networks, emphasised the “existence of strong collaborations, from within the region, nationally and internationally.” According to the publication Research Fortnight Leeds Metropolitan Univeristy is now top of the rankings in terms of research on tourism.
Through academic research, collaborative projects, consultancy, conferences, publications, professional development and postgraduate programmes, we aim to contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities of tourism as a global phenomenon at different social and political scales. We are interested in the theoretical and political issues related to tourism / tourist culture, tourism development, and the mobilisation of cultural resources by, and for, the tourism sector. We are also interested in assessing the potential of tourism to promote and support cultural diversity, stimulate intercultural dialogue and contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
Through our partners and conference series, we animate one of the largest multidisciplinary networks of tourism scholars in the world. With more than twenty researchers and staff hosted in the Old School Board building in the heart of Leeds, the CTCC offers one of the most vibrant environments for the postgraduate, doctoral and postdoctoral study of tourism and culture relationships.
